Why I Fight

By Alexa Conners

Condensing my life to an elevator speech is nearly impossible, but here is a shot. I have lived a rewarding, yet chaotic life. I moved 12 times throughout my childhood and went to 5 different high schools.

Despite struggling times, I maintained the grades to play year round basketball. As much as I would have loved to play college basketball (and had the offers to do it) I knew I wasn't ready for college. Instead, I took a unique journey through the workforce that eventually lead me to my new dream- becoming a Mixed Martial Arts champion.

At home, I have 3 amazing siblings and a beautiful, strong mother. I strive to be the best "me" that I can be every single day for them. Last year, I lost my father to suicide. He battled his whole life with mental health illness and ultimately made the horrific decision to take his girlfriend's life before taking his own.

With that being said, I fight for a bigger purpose than myself. I fight to show you can overcome anything that life throws at you. I fight to show that love and strength from family and friends is all you need. I hope to help "submit the stigma" through my fights while sharing our family story.

I know my dad would want me to help people and raise the awareness that society is terrified to talk about. I will be a world champion.
